Owning a dog is one of the most satisfying experiences you can have. They are always glad to see you, never disagree with you and always give you lots of love. They aren’t the perfect pet for everyone though, some people prefer a pet which requires less attention like a cat, you never have to walk it and yet it will still give you attention when you need it and be a source of happiness, but dogs are more popular right now. However owning a dog is not as simple as most people think, you can’t just buy a dog without any preparation or finding out how to take proper care of one, that is not fair on them.
Here are a few different things that everybody who plans to get a dog should consider.
You need to train your dog: The best time to train your dog is when it is young, that way they haven’t developed bad habits over the years which you will have to train out of them, so just because your dog is cute and young when you first get it then that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need training. Without training then they will be a lot less willing to listen to you when you do tell them off or get them to stop doing something, and might develop bad habits such as chewing his or her dog bed so you need to shell out on indestructible dog beds.
It actually doesn’t cost that much if you want to train your dog. Probably the best way to go about it is to find some evening classes near you where you learn and implement the techniques with a group of people and a trainer. That is just the start though, once you have learned the techniques then you need to apply every day with your dog until they listen to you.
Grooming is not just about their appearance: You will need to groom your dog a lot, probably once a week or at least every two weeks, so while you can take them to a professional to have that done then the cost will soon mount up. Plus grooming is a really nice time to create a stronger bond between you and your dog, which you don’t get if somebody else is doing it. Just grab a good dog brush once a week and give their coat a good brush to remove any dirt and loose hairs, and while you do that then keep an eye out for any signs of cuts or bumps or infections that could mean your dog needs a visit to the vet.
You need to make time for your dog: Sometimes it is easy to ignore your pets as you don’t think they need attention like a child would, but they do. They need to feel connected with you and know you reciprocate their feelings, and if they don’t get that then they might get sad or angry and try to get your attention by being naughty. So set aside some time when you get home to fuss over them and play with them for a bit, or make sure you take them out for a walk each day and play with them then.
